Summary: "In 1833, in the Ardeche Mountains, travelers in a public carriage take refuge in an inn. The innkeepers plot to kill and rob them. A debauched and gluttonous monk rescues them from this unhappy situation, but soon after leaving the inn, the carriage plunges over a precipice. An excellent success by Autant-Lara and his team, stylistically polished, with a rough Voltairean satire that is lively but lacks bitterness. The theme was suggested to Aurenche by 'the bloodstained inn of Peyrebell.' The characters of the travelers are only sketched but the three principals are all excellent. One of Fernandel's best roles." The Dictionary of Films by Georges Sadoul.
